Trophy Blog #103 ~ A local Trophy and Engraving business doesn’t just send their products to near by sports clubs and businesses, they have now ventured further afield into new territory. The Romanian Curling Federation are now customers to the Selby town centre based company. The Federation chairman got in touch with Business Partner Steve (our trading up columnist) via eBay as they had spotted the ideal item for sale via their online Trophy shop. After a few email exchanges, Steve was able to source the rest of the items on his list, arrange the engraving and dispatch it all in time to meet the three week deadline. Engraving Manager Andrew Butler (Steve’s brother) had an extra task to tackle, he had to find a way to change the set up of the engraving machine to cater for the extra markings in the Romanian Alphabet. This took a while to do, and luckily he remembered how to reverse the process back into English mode for future orders. The family business sent a big package to Bratislava in Slovakia via courier. The customer requested regular tracking updates , so Steve watched online as the parcel traveled via East Midlands airport and onto a huge cargo hub in Belgium before entering Slovakia for the final road journey into the city of Bratislava. The Romanian team had entered the National Curling Championships and needed prizes, trophies and medals to hand out to the 27 team members who took part. Steve asked for a few photos to be sent over to him to see how they got on and both parties have agreed to stay in touch for future requirements. Curling reached a new British audience back in 2002 when Britain won the Gold medal at the Salt Lake Winter Olympics. Hopefully the current British squad will do the same at the Winter Olympics currently taking place in Russia.
York Trophy Blog #102 ~ Selby’s night life has been given four new options in the last week or two. These new venues have created numerous jobs, investment and opportunities. It is also another way to relax with friends and family saving the hassle of travelling to our near by towns and cities. Any reason to ‘stay local’ is a good thing for our local economy. Over £200,000 has been spent on the old Market Tavern site by A&J Inns. Based in Bradford, the company has invested a large amount of cash to create the Square Bar over three levels. They know what works having run the huge Big Fella’s nightclub in Pontefract for 15 years. It is great to see money being invested into an empty building that was sat doing nothing. On the other side of town, The Treehouse has opened opposite Superdrug on Gowthorpe. The new manager has been in the trade for many years and I’m sure we all wish him well in his new venture. My office is over the road from this site and I have listened to the various drills and saws from the tradesmen as they completely revamped the interior. I’ve alos overheard positive news about the cocktails on the menu from people stood outside. Also recently opened are two new restaurants, again taking over empty retails spaces. Olives and Grills has given Selby folk a new option when deciding about going out. Its Turkish and Mediterranean options have been given good reviews on social media sites. Delilah’s has also opened opposite the Library, again a lot of money and energy has been involved transforming the old offices into a modem bar and restaurant.
Trophy Blog #101 ~ In 2014, we have sadly seen two plane incidents belonging to the same airline. The lost of any life if very sad and our thoughts are with their family and friends left behind. As it stands at this moment in time, Malaysia Airlines didn’t do anything wrong, but it looks like they could be badly affected business wise. No cash flow inwards means going bust or seeking major investment. They still have wages to pay and routes to fly, but with less fare paying passengers. They have announced that they are to refund passengers who no longer wish to travel with them. Both MH370 & MH17 we’re standard, every day flights, travelling to cities we have all heard of. If you was about to travel long distance, would you fly with them? I’ve been to Australia twice, and would have used that flight path over the Ukraine. The MH17 crash happened while I was on holiday, the last thing I wanted to do while watching the news was to get on a plane, but two days later we landed at Leeds Bradford safe and sound. The second leg of the MH17 journey would have been onto Australia or New Zealand. People will be changing plans and using a rival airline.

On the 7th September, Andrew, our Head Engraver who engraves all of our Trophies, will be
hitting the streets of Newcastle to raise funds for the York Teaching Hospital Charity by
taking part in this year's Great North Run. He hopes to raise over £500 for the charity by
running the 13.1 mile course.

Andrew, who also volunteers as a governor at York Teaching Hospitals NH Foundation Trust
said: “I've only ever ran once before when I did the York 10k for York Mind, so I'm
really looking forward to the challenge to raise some money for a great charity and
promote some of the fantastic work they do. In Selby the charity worked with The Friends
of Selby Hospital to provide two self care dialysis machines which will save those in
need of regular dialysis from having to travel to York or Leeds several times a week by
providing the care closer to home. The time saved in travel over the course of treatment
gives precious hours and days back to the patient to spend with their families
- You really can't put a price on the benefit these machines give!”

It all hasn't been plain sailing for Andrew while training, shortly after signing up
for the Great North Run he took a tumble and injured his right leg. It was a bit
touch and go to as to if I'd be able to take part in the run, but thanks to a bit
of determination and a referral to the superb Physiotherapy team at Selby Hospital
I'm all healed up and ready to face that start line.”
Trophy Blog #100 ~ As reported in last weeks Selby Times, Another positive step forward has been made for the land between Barlby and Selby. The new housing development at the former Hovis factory site, will create 800 new homes and many jobs in the process. This is a huge boost for the area, people moving into the area will spend their wages in the local shops and facilities. Also in the pipeline are new shops, restaurants, football pitches and a new school. While people will complain about taking shoppers out of the main high street, any positive news must be a step in the right direction. A huge loan has been agreed by the Government to fill the funding gap and hopefully work will start in the next few years. I wrote a previous column about the original plans, which was estimated to cost £300million. This included 985 new homes, but the latest news shows that number has now been reduced. Developers and owners of the land, BOCM Pauls said they would review the size of the site at regular intervals and after the first 300 homes were built. They have recently knocked down the old, unused factories and still have work to do to bring the rubble down to street level. The government have announced that up to £11m will be invested in the scheme, with the first few million pounds expected by 2016. On the other side of the river is the old Rigid site, also earmarked for housing and businesses to be built on it. York has also been promised a huge injection of money and talk has been made to electrify the Hambleton to Selby train line so that trains can run faster up to the junction before connecting with the already electrified east coast main line.
